So much so, that it is designated as a wine-growing area (when not agricultural) rather than anything else.
Hence, there is a great abundance of vineyards in the Colchagua Valley, each of which offers particular characteristics to the grapes that are planted in this sector and, consequently, to the wines produced in this area.
The best Colchagua wines are those whose production is as faithful as possible to the benefits that this area offers, considering the climate, nutrients in its soils, light and other factors. Thus, the vineyards in the Colchagua Valley are known for producing full-bodied red wines. There are four main grape varieties produced in this valley:

- Syrah
- Carmenere
- Merlot

The tour was fantastic, since it is a beautiful area and the wineries we stopped at were excellent. I cant say enough of the knowledge of food and wines from Mauricio and Nicolas, and they were so friendly and easy-going that made our stay there great.
We knew that the cycling would be a different experience than what we did in Patagonia with you a few years back – touring bikes were much more appropriate for type of roads and cycling we were doing in the Colchagua valley.
Mauricio also did a good job of adjusting the itinerary due to us adding an additional night and schedule issue with a support driver – they always discussed any changes with us beforehand.
